While the fandom is divided over the fate of Oliver Queen aka Green Arrow let's find out who exactly the Spectre is and what exactly to expect out of him.
A few day's ago the CW Network released a new poster which featured our beloved Oliver Queen not with his bow and arrows but dresses as the mysterious figure Spectre. This left the Arrow Fandom quiet divided. While some where really happy to see their beloved emerald archer get some crazy powers and don the legendary mantle of spectre, some where really upset over the suit he spots in that poster (Like seriously?).
So instead of landing on conclusions and debating over that suit, we decided better to figure out what or who exactly the Spectre is and it's origins.
Warning, this post contains some minor spoilers if you haven't watched the crisis on infinite earths parts 1,2,3 yet.
So, the origin story goes like this.
Jim Corrigan, is a cop/detective who's fiance Clarice is kidnapped by some thugs. On his way to free her, Jim is lured into a trap and both Jim and his fiance are killed by the thugs. All Done? not yet..
Jim's soul is refused entry into the afterlife and he is sent back to earth by an entity known only as "The Voice" as the host of the "spectre" to eliminate evil, punish their crimes and kick ass.
So we can pretty much say that the Spectre is the DC equivalent of The Ghost Rider. Well not exactly..
So, the Spectre seeks bloody revenge against Corrigan's murderers and finishes them of without even breaking a sweat ( the spirit of vengeance against some local thugs.duh!)
As the story continues Corrigan soon adopts his signature costume and continues to live a normal life but at the same time assuming the secret identity of Spectre.
It is later revealed that Spectre is a fallen-angel who participated in Lucifer's rebellion but later backed off and was punished by having to embody "the god's wrath" and serve punishment to the unjust.
The spirit has had several hosts around thousand of years with Corrigan being the latest of additions to the list. In one particular timeline after several years Corrigan's soul finally finds rest and spectre leaves his body to find a host in Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern(woah!)
We don't see the Green Lantern making an appearance in the CW anytime soon so let's go back to our beloved Oliver Queen.
As we saw in the "Crisis part 3" Mia, Constantine and Diggle in order to resurrect Oliver, they have to bring his soul back. Hence, in order to do so they travel to purgatory. But there the emerald archer is met by none other than Jim Corringan the original Spectre, who convinces him to stay in limbo.
If our assumption is true they i.e Jim and Oliver made a deal after which Oliver assumes the mantle of the Spectre (temporarily or permanent we don't know yet) in order to aid the pentagons against the Anti-Monitor.
From what we know, in the comic events of the crisis Spectre was the only one who stood up to the Anti-Monitor one on one and played a crucial role in the later's defeat. So, by this it will be quite exciting to witness our very own Ollie go one on one with the Anti-Monitor exchange some punches or punchline's at least.
Anyhow we know for sure that our heroes are going to put up a hell of a fight and Ollie's is going to go all out and perhaps become the saviour that the whole humanity needs. Is he going to remain as a part of the arrowverse as spectre or is he going to call it quits, only time will tell. For this we'll have to wait and watch.
The Crisis on Infinite Earths concludes with Arrow (part 4) and Legends of Tomorrow (part 5) on Tuesday Jan 14th.
